DMLS/SLM technology

Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS), also called Selective Laser Melting (SLM) technology, uses a laser beam as the heat source for melting of metal powders. The laser usually operates in near infrared or visible range, and the laser beam motion, which exposes selected areas of the powder bed to heating, is controlled by an optical system containing of mirrors and lenses.

As it is the case with other PBF technologies for metals, DMLS/SLM technology has following characteristics:

  • While the powder in the powder bin is capable of supporting the products, the cooling of the product during production process requires support structures that serve as heat conductors from the hot top products layer to the cold baseplate.
  • High temperature gradients lead to strong residual stresses in products , and the heat treatment is a usual post-processing step for all metal PBF technologies;
